How To Change Your Career

Is your current career or job:

1. Stressful

2. Low paying

3. Not challenging

4. Showing little room for long-term growth

5. Just not you?

Many Academy of Learning students enroll in one of our programs after changing careers.  Although it’s never easy to switch careers, doing so can help improve one’s life. But how do you actually go about changing careers?  The process is different for everyone but there are some steps that will guide the career change process.

1. Research

Set aside a bit of time each day to research.  Initial research usually involves checking out career websites and resources on and offline, but aptitude tests are equally important.

During this phase, many people make an appointment with an Academy of Learning staff member to ask about the many programs that Academy of learning offers at www.academyoflearning.com.

Short on time?

The process of changing careers can be intimidating for individuals who are short on time. Try to set aside a few minutes each day, even if it’s after the kids have gone to bed.

If time is a big concern for you, but you want to attend a college to upgrade your skills, think about one of Academy of Learning’s courses – with flexible start times, a work-at-your-own pace schedule and hands-on help, many time issues can be avoided.

2.Reflect

So you know which career you might want to choose, and you’ve done some research on possible ways to attain a job in the career field – now’s the time to pause and reflect.

Identify the top five things that caused you to change careers in the first place.  Is there a danger of running into these stressors in the new career?  If you don’t know the answer to the question, talk to a career coach, someone at an educational institution, such as an Academy of Learning recruiter, or someone who works in your desired career field.

3.Plan

Now that you have decided what you want to do and which career you are going to pursue, it is time to map out the concrete steps do you need to take to get there.  Write out these steps and break each one down into manageable tasks.

For example, if you wanted to take a course at Academy of Learning, it would make sense to make an appointment with one of our college’s financial advisors to see what sort of financial aid you could get.  So, the step to take would be to –make an appointment with financial advisor at AoL– and the action steps underneath would read:

-Look up the phone number for Academy of Learning nearest you by going to our website atwww.academyoflearning.com

-Call and make appointment

-Ask what documentation you might need to bring to the meeting.

Breaking action items into manageable tasks makes the process seem less daunting.

Areas that many students that come to Academy of Learning have to plan around are:

  1. 1. Financial - applying for loans and assembling financial documentation.
  2. 2. Logistical
    1. Childcare – arranging for adequate supervision while working on homework and studying and attending courses.
    2. Transportation – how will you get to the college?  Do you need to buy a bus pass?

Representatives of Academy of Learning are always on hand to help students through the planning process.

4. Execute

Once you’ve done the initial legwork and come up with a solid logistical and financial plan, you’re ready to execute.  Get ready to watch your life improve.  Good luck, you deserve a great life.
